Assassins Creed 2

While it's been no secret that Assassin's Creed 2 is in the works, little has been known about the game until now. At the Ubisoft press conference, a new trailer was shown and Ubi has announced an official release date for the title.

At the conference yesterday, a new trailer for the sequel to Assassin's Creed showcased the 15th Century Venice setting and Altair's replacement, Ezio, in action.

Assassins Creed 2 release date is November 17, 2009. Assassins Creed 1 sold over 8 million units worldwide. Assassin’s Creed 2 was shown off at E3 2009 during both Sony’s E3 Press Conference as well as at Ubisoft’s E3 Press Conference. The game will be released on November 17th, 2009 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

The Assassin’s Creed 2 demo starts off in the city square with fireworks going off in the background and series protagonist Desmond stalking through the streets as another one of his ancient ancestors, just like in the first game. However in Assassin’s Creed 2 you do not start out as an Assassin, but rather as a nobelman who is on a quest for vengeance. As Ezio, players will learn a number of even more deadlier attacks than Altier learned in the first Assassin’s Creed and they get even more lethal as players progress through the story. Leonardo Da Vinci also plays a big part in the game as a personal friend of Ezio’s. And he will outfit Ezio with a number of his inventions and gadgets throughout the game, including his famous flying machine that allows Ezio to sour through the city skies! Or glide rather.

The trailer itself looks great, and it's hard to not be excited about the game's new setting and character, and the abilities he commands. We'll be stopping by the Ubisoft booth at some point during the show and will provide our own impressions of the game later this week.

Travian is a browser game with a world full of thousands of users who all begin as the leaders of small villages. I believe it is a bit more than that. It is a competitive game where you build a mighty empire and destroy all who stand in your way! . . . . perhaps that is not the best description, but it fits it well enough. The point of this game is to build up your puny little village into something less puny and little, while managing to not be raided of all of your resources.

Travian is an award-winning German massively multiplayer online browser-based strategy game developed by Travian Games GmbH.[1]

The game's developers drew roughly from Classical antiquity and particularly from the Roman Empire to create a predominantly militaristic real-time strategy. Along with three English versions, and the original German version, the game has been translated into over 40 other languages,[1][2] and has over 3 million players and over 250 servers worldwide.[3][4] In 2006, it won the Superbrowsergame Award, in the large games category.[1][4][5][6]

Travian is programmed in PHP and runs in most modern browsers (such as Camino, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari). Travian was also the first game of its type to be playable on mobile phones. When played on a mobile phone, it uses Java.[7]

[edit] The game

Every player enters Travian as a leader of a small village as a Roman, Gaul or Teuton[8] with two people—a population of two—in their village. The village has only one building, known as the Main Building, around which are spaces for further buildings to be constructed. There are some prerequisites for constructing most buildings.

Around the outside of the village there are 18 resource fields that are level 0 (shown with no number). Every player's first village has the same distribution of resource fields, but additional villages may have a different distribution of fields. Each resource field is either a Woodcutter (produces Wood/Lumber), Clay Pit (produces Clay), Iron Mine (produces Iron) or Wheat Field/Cropland (produces Wheat/Crop). These fields produce a certain amount of resources per hour, depending on their levels. At level 0, each resource field produces two units per hour. There are also oases which increase the production rate of resources, and can be occupied using a Hero when the Hero's mansion has reached a sufficient level. Resources are required to construct buildings, to sustain the population and to train and feed troops. (see below). A player can increase the production rate by upgrading the fields.[9]

At the start of the game, the selection of buildings a player can construct is very limited. As the village is developed, a wider range of buildings become available for construction.

A greater aspect for the game is its troops. Troops are produced in the Barracks, Stable and Workshop. They allow a player to raid other villages and steal their resources, which will benefit the attacker. When the Barracks have been upgraded to a level three, the player may build an Academy, which allows them to research new types of troops;[10] the player may also construct new types of buildings (such as the Armoury [11] and Blacksmith [12]) once the Academy has been upgraded to a sufficient level. A Stable allows cavalry to be trained. These units are faster and more expensive than infantry. The Workshop allows siege engines—rams which destroy walls and catapults which destroy buildings—to be manufactured. These units are slower and more expensive than infantry and cavalry. Administrators, known more commonly as chiefs, are units which persuade enemy villages to join the attacker's realm. Units which gain experience in battle, known as Heroes, can be trained from an existing unit in the Hero's mansion.

The ultimate goal of Travian is to construct and upgrade a Wonder of the World (see End game) to level 100. The World Wonder requires millions of resources and takes a large amount of time to complete. Once a World Wonder is upgraded to level 100, the game ends and the winner and his/her alliance is announced. A player needs a construction plan in order to be able to construct a World Wonder; these plans are obtained from Natarian villages (see End game).

An appropriate ranking system has been created that determines the players' rank from raiding, attacking, defending and building. Players can earn medals for their profile page by taking a certain place in the ranks. If a player gets themselves into the ranks, and earns a medal, it will contain information about the category, the position they came and of what week in since the start of the server they earned it.

There are three tribes available to be played, the Romans, the Gauls, and the Teutons. Each has their own characteristics. The Romans complete upgrades faster than other tribes, the Gauls defend better than the others, and the Teutons are geared towards an aggressive style of play.

However, the actual style always comes down to the player, and his/her style of play. The fourth tribe, known as the "Natars", are an NPC tribe who were—according to the game—the enslavers of the Gauls and the Teutons before the Romans invaded Travian. The Natars enjoy many benefits normal tribes do not, but only come into the game as part of the end game sequence, more specifically, 300 days after the start of the server (except if the player is on a speed server, in which case they appear after 100 days).

A player is able to found additional villages. These increase total resource production, causes population growth and help support larger armies. To found a second village the player must first create and extend a Residence or Palace to level 10, and also have 2,000 (500 for Speed server) Culture points. Culture points are automatically produced daily and accumulated, based on the buildings in the village(s).

To found another village after the second, 8000 culture points are needed. 20000 for the fourth, 39000 for the fifth 65000 for the sixth, and so on. Almost all buildings made in Travian give the village Culture points. After the amount of culture points are achieved, the player may train 3 Settlers to go and found a new village at any vacant area chosen. Settlers must be given 750 of each resource before they start their journey. A player may also create an Administrator (Senator, Chief or Chieftain) instead. These units need a level 20 Academy first. They allow the player to conquer another player's village and make it their own, but a player's last or only village (i.e. the capital) cannot be conquered this way.

The game is heavily geared towards cooperative play. In fact the only likely way to win the game is through cooperation with an alliance. It's nearly impossible for single players to win, but an alliance can win together.

Resources can be traded between players, and towns can be reinforced with another player's troops. An in-game alliance feature is also available, providing the main catalyst for strategic play within Travian; players join and fight together from mutual benefit. Within an alliance, players can view attack and defense information for all alliance members, and also benefit from improved communication tools such as mass alliance-wide in-game messages.

Since the maximum number of members in an alliance is 60, 'wings' tend to form as an alliance develops. Splitting into wings entitles having multiple sub-alliances, often with similar names, acting as one alliance but in different areas of the game. . Players in the same alliance may attack each other, but this would be considered treason. Towards the end of a round, different alliances often join together, resulting in larger coalitions (meta alliances); other diplomatic agreements include non-aggression pacts (NAP) and confederations.

Each Travian server ends with the "end game" sequence. For normal servers the sequence begins after about 300 days, and for Speed3x servers,[13] it starts after about 100 days. After this time has elapsed the Natars, a vicious tribe controlled by the computer, are released. As the players on the server begin to build the Wonder of the World, the plans of which they have captured from the Natars, they meet resistance. With every five levels that the Wonder is built, the Natars attack the villages containing the Wonders until level 95, when they will then attack upon the building of every new level. The first player to build their World Wonder to level 100 wins the server, which stops and restarts after some time. Then a new game begins.

Version 3 featured oases which could be annexed, and would supplement the player's hourly resource production, as opposed to the oases in version 2, which were only present for visual appeal. Version 3 also introduced 'heroes', units which gain experience in battles. In version 3, the maximum level buildings can be extended to have been increased; moreover, the resource fields in the player's capital village can be upgraded infinitely, at least theoretically. In practice, crop fields and clay pits can reach level 19 and woodcutters and iron mines can reach level 18. This requires the village center to have 12 warehouses and 7 granaries. An edition of this version where events take place three times faster, known as Travian Speed3x, was released later. Update 3.1 introduced "quests", which players can complete to receive rewards in the form of resources and game Gold from the Questmaster.

On March 16, 2007, an announcement was made about the release of Travian Classic, known as Travian 2.5, which was based on version 3 but had certain features disabled in order to make it similar to version 2.[15] Version 3.5, an update to the current version, was first implemented on the original .org server (German) in early February, and was implemented on other servers with the game restarting in mid-2009.[14][16][17][18][19]

Travian forums enable players to ask questions, recruit, find out about server restarts and much more. The forums use different user names and passwords to the game itself which means that each member has to register to use them.

There are also forums which are only accessible to alliance members. These are used by alliance members to communicate with each other, and are accessed by players using in-game hyperlinks. However, these forums tend to be replaced by external forums if the alliance splits into wings, or becomes a wing of another alliance.

Travian was initially financed through players upgrading accounts with Travian Plus and web banners. Later, an option for purchasing 'Gold' replaced the one for buying 'Plus' on most servers. The introduction of 'Gold' allowed players to directly influence the game mechanics: for instance, by increasing resource production, instant completion of building and researches or applying a strength bonus to troops. Accounts upgraded with Plus allowed building queues, larger maps and other functional abilities. These effects are similar to the capabilities of user scripts, but implementing these can result in a banning of the offending account as they are against the general terms and conditions of Travian. Travian has also expanded to include a "Travian Shop" which includes Travian-related items like clothing and mugs.

Speculation is tough to do on a model such as the Honda Civic, which always comes in so many variations. Unlike the Golf, for example, which is pretty much the same car wherever you go in the world, Honda chooses to create different Civic models depending on the market where it will be sold.

North American models are often larger and forged as compact sedans while in Europe the Honda Civic comes as your standard-issue mid-sized hatchback. And domestically in Japan, as well as in other Asian markets, it comes in its own guise too.

Futuristic styling. Hybrid power. Advanced interior design. And it’s all wrapped up in a lightweight, fun-to-drive package. What a concept! It’s the Honda CR-Z concept, to be exact—and it made its North American debut at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Feeding our hatch need like Sigfried & Roy feed tigers, a magazine scan from Temple of VTEC points to a production version of the Honda CR-Z Concept for U.S. consumption. Will the CRX return?

We've already reported on the CR-Z Hybrid getting a green light, but then we worried the rumors were about the Honda Insight. If this scan from Japanese automag Mag-X and a TOV-posters translation are to be believed, the new CR-Z will be a small, non-hybrid hatch equipped with a small fourbanger and a CVT and six-speed manual transmission.

Shorthand for “Compact Renaissance Zero,” the CR-Z is a forward-thinking exercise in inspired design and environmental technology. The CR-Z draws its inspiration from a need to deliver spirited performance in an efficient manner. It is our goal to deliver a small CR-Z-based hybrid in the near future as part of our commitment to help effect positive environmental change. So keep on the lookout for more details about the CR-Z.

The CR-Z hatchback will quite likely share some similarities with the new Civic, including a hybrid drivetrain made up of a 1.5 liter gasoline/petrol engine coupled to Honda's Integrated Motor Assist, along with a choice of a 6-speed manual or a CVT transmission.

Honda keeps having to play catch-up with Toyota's Prius in terms of its hybrid offering, with the Prius having established itself as the model that defines the hybrid car. And a well-received Civic hybrid is essential to the success of the whole Civic range.

At the Detroit Auto Show in January, Cadillac surprised the crowd with a gorgeous concept coupe called the Converj. Built on the same Voltec platform as the Chevy Volt, the Converj was seen as a potential way for GM to leverage the pricey ER-EV drivetrain in a vehicle that could sell at a premium price, hopefully recovering some of the development costs. According to Todd Lassa at Motor Trend, the Converj has been given the green light for production in 2011, a year after the Volt launches. When we talked to GM's Bob Kruse at the Detroit show, he indicated a production Converj would likely use exactly the same powertrain as the Volt although it could have different calibrations to allow somewhat higher performance than the Chevrolet.

Like the Volt, the Converj can go 40 miles on batteries alone, then a gas engine kicks in to extend the range. Recharging via a wall outlet is also possible. Head to CarandDriver and you’ll see an image of the beast up close. What you’re seeing is a Chevy Volt, in Cadillac casing. Reports suggest that the Cadillac Converj will be able to manage 40 miles just on batteries alone. Once you’ve used that up, you’ll then be able to make use of a gas engine to extend driving range further.

The Cadillac Converj may be one way in which General Motors can hope to generate some much needed revenue, following their ongoing financial problems. Still though, the Converj is lightyears away as a estimated arrival is set at 2012.

The Nokia E71x is very thin with a QWERTY keyboard and Quickoffice allows users to create and view MS Office documents. You can even make a quick PowerPoint presentation on the fly. Although one reviewer had trouble getting the GPS to work, others liked it, and one suggested supplementing AT&T Navigator with Google Maps for walking directions. The camera takes good photos outdoors, the colors were, however, not good. All reviewers, we reviewed, found the call quality to be good on the Nokia E71x. They liked the music player and video functions but did not like that the headset jack was the non-standard 2.5 mm. The Nokia E71x worked fined as a tethered modem.

The screen is smaller than the iPhone but was still called beautiful. One reviewer called the performance of the Nokia E71x superb. The Nokia E71x does not like the iPhone or some other messaging phone deal packages required a data plan. Therefore if you have access to Wi-Fi often you can save over other plans. Dell says the Wasabi PZ310 uses Zink paper embedded with yellow, magenta, and cyan dye crystals. The device uses heat to activate and colorize these crystals and your photo magically appears. Zink is a descendant of the venerable Polaroid technology.

Man, have to love this little box! Setting up my netflix account on the box is as simple as going to an activation screen on netflix and entering a code from the Roku setup wizard. That’s it. Now, you have your selection of Netflix’s instant movie catalogue. No, it can’t play the entire Netflix catalogue. I wish it could. Once you add movies to your queue on Netflix from your computer, they show up in your queue on the Roku player. You can then watch to your hearts content. By the way, Netflix queue management isn’t the greatest. If you want to sort the queue to your heart’s content, I would suggest you get greasemonkey for Firefox. It’s a plugin. Once you have that, go and get the Netflix queue greasemonkey script. That will allow you to sort it the way you like. Works great.

Watching a movie is pretty much a joy. It loads fast. The fast forward feature is a little hokey and cumbersome. I wouldn’t doubt if they change that in future firmware iterations. You options are pretty limited and the navigation is simple. I’m sure that’s how Roku wanted it. Simple and easy. And I think that’s what will make this player really popular. Most people want that. Yes, there are those who want every option and the freedom to play. But I think they are the minority.

I haven’t played with Amazon videos yet, but will be shortly. I want to check how their service handles things from an API standpoint. Netflix does okay. It’s a bummer they don’t handle True HD yet, with accompanying 5.1 sound. But I bet that’s coming. All in all, I would highly recommend the Roku and Netflix combo. Plus, it’s very cheap on a month to month basis. I went with the $9/month subscription. That allows 1 DVD out at a time with unlimited instant downloads. Pretty amazing. $100; roku.com

The massive 8.4L V10 engine from the Dodge Viper has never been short on power. This undeniable fact hasn't stopped enterprising souls from tweaking the powerplant to offer even more, however, and past efforts have focused on doing so through the use of ethanol in lieu of gasoline. That route is now being taken by upstart Spanish automaker GTA.

GTA is reportedly borrowing the Viper's V10 engine from Dodge for use in its new $670,000 Spano supercar, and it's topped the already powerful mill with a supercharger that raises output to a 780 horsepower. Need more ponies? Alternate engine mapping allows the flex-fuel engine to put out a ridiculous 840 horsepower when running on ethanol.

That kind of power should have little problem pushing the Spano to its estimated top speed of 217 miles per hour, while the run to 60 mph is expected to take a scant 2.9 seconds. Click past the break for the full press release.

New Spanish Supercar Marque GTA Announces First Completed Model

It is not every day that a brand new supercar company comes along out of nowhere with a brand new completed product. The blogosphere is full of half-baked info on startup car companies with outlandish spec sheets and sloppy computer renderings, but new Spanish marque GTA is for real. Their first model, the 2010 GTA Spano, can proudbly claim performance placing it among the top handful of fastest cars in the world.

GTA is new at building production cars, but not to the world of high performance. A Spanish race team with a history of winning, GTA is in the process of realizing its dream of building a supercar among the most capable in the world. The resulting Spano certainly looks the part, be it on paper or in its muscular exterior design.

The GTA Spano's design looks great from every angle, though it must be noted that the Spano borrows design cues from other acclaimed supercars, most notably the Saleen S7, Bugatti Veyron and modern Lamborghini designs. The rear end, with its louvered flank and windshield, call to mind Saleen S7 and Mustang designs. The C-to-A pillar section, with its rounded bubble shape, looks a little too Bugatti. And the sharply creased front end is so much like the Gallardo's that some may mistake the GTA Spano for something from the Raging Bull.

It appears bankrupt Chrysler has finally found something to do with its extra V10 motors laying around, as it is unlikely next year will see a new Dodge Viper. GTA takes the Viper V10 and reengineers it for GTA Spano duty, where it can make up to 840 horsepower when running on E90 bioethanol race fuel. This is plenty of power when we are moving around a featherweight supercar weighing in at a large pizza less than 3000 lbs.

The result is self evident: the Spano will run 0-62 in 2.9 seconds, all the way up to a governed--presumably for safety reasons--top speed of 217 mph. The Spano will debut in Europe soon with a limited production run of 99 units. Initial reports point to a 2010 GTA Spano base price of around $670,000. A bargain in the rare-air supercar world? Depends on how you look at it.

Design

GTA Motor´s design department , directed by Sento Pallardó, has strived to create an unique automobile that does not resemble other cars in any way. In this way, a preliminary design has been evolving until the present-day, which has succeeded in combining sportsmanship, elegance and exclusivity in a single concept. In other words, a very different style to that wich currently exists in the international automobile scene.

One of Spano´s main distinguishing characteristics lies in its lateral view, where the doors fit perfectly into the air intakes, wich apart from performing an aerodynamic function, refrigerate elements such as oil coolers, power-assisted steering and brakes, among others. Its design is original, never seen to date, this being yet another distinguishing mark of Concept. As in all true sports cars, the doors have not doorframes.

Access to the interior is accomplished by pressing the GTA logotype, rendering it, a more elegant design without the traditional handles.

In its frontal view affords it with a strong personality along with its two large lateral air intakes nd its convex bonnet, completed with an aerodynamic streamlining zone to facilitate the air flow, providing it with an athletic look.

At the rear, the design departament has attempted to create the best way to channel the air that flows under the car.The resulting effect is a rear design with plenty of character, marked by the use of glass, wich has small openings that perform a refrigeration function for the engine. The wing fits perfectly into the design with under air channelling, while the two air intakes and the twin exhaust system emphasise the vehicle´s sport
character. There is a rear barrel to channel air and to improve the aerodynamic load.

The design for the wing mirrors has been a framework with carbon fibre finished with a wing-like airm, built in aeronautical mechanised aluminium.

The large glazed surface, affords the vehicle a strong quality, which is another of its distinguishing traits. The vehicle has a patented system of interior lighting and liquid crystal shading and the degree if light required inside may be regulated. Its completely novel sun visors are set into the glass and boast the same technology.

The electrically operated windows have been made according to the lastest technology, in such a way that the tracks are maintenance free and work problem free at various temperature.

The wheels, in 19" at the front and 20" at the rear, are characterised by their angular shape. They have been designed specifically for this model. Their design is exclusive for this car with offers a continuousness effect, with the chassis. There is a flat exterior part that perfoms an aerodynamical function, offering greater resistance and involving less weight.

Interior Design

The interior design has been one of the best kept secrets of the project. High quality materials such as leather and carbon fibre, aluminium and titanium have been used. Ample space is another of its characteristics and a person over 2 meters in height can be seated without problems.

The design of the dashboard feigns the lateral part of the car, and provides the interior wich much character. The instrument panel is distinguished by an LCD screen, wich can be personalised according to the customer´s
requiremens and provides all the necessary information. The steering wheel is made out of carbon sportsmanship of this vehicle. A joystick is located behind the steering wheel to operate elements such as lights wipers and
indicators.

One of Spano´s innovations is that it has no central rear-view mirror, rather a rear camera that projects on to an LCD screen which is perfectly located on the dashboard. It also has a large angular camera to facilitate parking manoeuvres. This camera automatically connects after locking the rear gear. The interior lights also use LED technology.

The GTA has two boots, one 100 litre one at the front and one 200 litre one at the rear, wich are certainly not out of place for an automobile of such characteristics. The front boot has a reverse opening system to make the
task of entering luggage easier.

Engine

GTA has developed a special engine for this car, and has opted for a V10, 8,3 litre engine placed in a longitudinal rear position.It has 780 horsepower and 920 Nw torque. As an extra option, the Concept is also available in a Bioethanol version, wich increases the power to 840 hp.

The GTA technicians have worked hard to enhance the compressor, so that GTA achieves amazing performances, at a top speed of over 350 km/h with acceleration from 0 to 100 Km/h in under threee seconds. These figures place it directly among the five fastest cars commercialised in the world. The precision of the engine´s control unit helps the engine to offer and increase in power progresively under all circumstances.

Spano also has an electronic power control system, provided according to customer´s wishes, which regulates power from a minimum of 450 cv to the maximum power.

The gearbox is available in three options, all of wich have seven gears: automatically sequential or automatically sequential with a paddle shift steering wheel or manual in H.

Chasis and dinamyc performance

The chassis has been one of aspects on wich special emphasis has been places while constructing Spano. The most state of the art technologies has beeen applied to the automobile world, thus achieving Spano to be the first car in the wold with aeronautical components, which makes it a reference in the automobile scene.

The chassis has been built completely out of carbon fibre, titanium and Kevlar, whose a rigidity is four times greater than that of many of the presently commercialised super cars, which offers the best safety level. With this technology, the weight of the monocasc is only 56 kg, while the total weigh is 1350 kg, with all the liquids and the most convenient equipment on board.

Aerodynamics is another of the most important factors to be taken into account when designing GTA. With a CX of 0,35 and a CL of 2,35 with the set rear wing,GTA is one of the best available in this section.

Thanks to its especial chassis outline and the materials used, GTA has a large traction capacity and is easy to drive, which is unlike what one might think of a car whose power is close to 800 hp. In this case, it offers a turn ratio of 10,8 meters to assist driving which makes very impressive manoeuvrability.

To bring this huge potential to a standstill, GTA´s braking system includes 380 mm diameter carbon ceramic ventilated disc brakes and 6 piston callipers supllied by AP Racing, with pneumatic assistance and ABS. GTA Spano also has a sophisticated traction control system.

The tyres are manufactured exclusively for this car by Pirelli: 255/35 on a 19" front wheel and 330/35 on a 20" rear wheel .

Spano also offers an electronic, programmable self-regulating absorption assistance, whic is capable of raising the car by up to 8 cm, to avoid irritating potholes and the regular speed bumps on roads. It also has a twin trapezium suspension, which enables all kinds of regulations.

Canon PowerShot D10 Unique adventure cam shot

The gang at Photography Blog have got their hands all over the PowerShot D10, and it looks like Canon didn't fare too badly with its first "adventure camera." Even if the reviewer didn't really drop it from a helicopter or shoot it with a bazooka (as we had originally hoped) the unit was found to be as intuitive, sensible, and dependable as the company's other point-and-shooters. Of course, a device with this robust of a design is going to suffer in a few areas, and the 3x, 35-135mm zoom lens and 2.5-inch display can easily be considered "rather hum-drum" for a camera in this day and age.

Unlike its fellow water baby, Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FT1, the D10 can reach depths up to 10 metres without an additional casing. It's also freeze proof to temperatures up to -10 degrees Celsius, and shockproof from drops up to 1.22 metres. The Mju Tough 8000 from Olympus, however, matches the D10 point for point on these specs, and pips the D10 at the post by being crushproof, just in case someone really heavy sits on it.

Inside the little mermaid is a 12.1-megapixel sensor and a 3x optical zoom, plus a 2.5-inch LCD screen with Canon's PureColour II technology. Image stabilisation is again standard. As with the rest of the Canon range, we have high hopes for image and build quality, which may just give us enough of a reason to opt for the new PowerShot over the host of other brands doing the same thing.

Shutter lag is a problem endemic across the range of rugged cameras, and we doubt the Canon will be any different. The frustrating delay between when you press the shutter button and the camera taking the photo is part and parcel of the underwater photography experience, so we hope for the best, but expect the worst with the D10.

We were also disappointed to see HD video recording shunted aside on the D10, after Canon's commitment to the format in its IXUS compact range.

Plus, there's one more drawback to the D10 we can see. It's not exactly, shall we say, attractive in the conventional sense; bulging corners and visible bolts don't exude sophistication in the style stakes. We also are wary of the additional snap-on covers that are available in orange, grey and camouflage (honestly, what was Canon thinking with this one), most likely being an additional cost.

As for pricing, Canon is remaining tight-lipped on the final cost of the D10. We will be interested to see where in the market the company chooses to place it: up with the more expensive AU$699 AVCHD Lite capable Panasonic FT1, or more towards the lower segment with the Olympus Mju Tough 6000 which is available at a street price of around AU$200. The D10 is set for release in May 2009, and we'll have a full review as soon as we get our snow mittens on one of these little cameras.

The verdict? If you're going to be dropping from airplanes or scavenging sunken treasure (actually, make that "reading on the beach" and "taking the kids snorkeling") this summer, you could do worse than shell out $329.99 for this bad boy.

Panasonic’s four thirds Micro System Lumix GH1 was actually unveiled two monhs ago, but now the anticipation for Panny’s top-end camera is really hotting up with the release of a few more tantalising details. The company do a couple of other pretty cool micro rc helicopters as well but this is the latest as is due to be released in 2010 - I guess to the military initially. As you can see from the video below this thing is no toy and is pretty maneuverable. Add to that the camera and 6 inch display on the control panel and you’ve got a serious bit of rc kit in a very little package. The PD-100 Black Hornet ‘nanocopter’ is an amazing mini helicopter that comes with many features that toy helicopters don’t come with. In fact this is designed as a spy gadget which can be used by the army and since its so small, it can’t be detected easily by the enemies. The Black Hornet is controlled by the smallest and also the lightest control servo in the world.

It weighs just 0.5 grams and the electric motor helps the Black Hornet to fly at speeds of 20mph. However these will only be sold to the government and its agencies and would not be sold in public though both military and civilian versions would be released. It would interesting to analyze how civilians could use such a spy gadget. Rather, it could even be misused and abused. A few weeks ago we were contacted by a group named Shandle. At the time I was like “well, what the hell is a Shandle?” I quickly found out that a Shandle is single-handedly the greatest innovation for single men, frat boys, potty-training (for toddlers or frat boys…or single men for that matter), and girlfriends obsessed with clean bathrooms. The Shandle is a device for any toilet seat that serves as a handle for the lower toilet cover. You know the second seat that you never want to touch because its either grimy or you’re at your friends place and you’re not quite sure who else has touched it or what could possibly be under there? Shandle solves that problem.

We were lucky enough to be sent samples from one of the employees and we went ahead and took pictures of the unpacking process. As much as we would like to post pictures of the Shandles in use, we found that Katherine’s toilet seat was considerably too high-tech for it to be installed in, and mine was..well. There won’t be any pictures of my bathroom anytime soon. (Didn’t get a clean enough bathroom). You’ll have to take my word on it, but the Shandle works well on most standard toilets and they come in over 60 assorted designs. Some are silly while others have decent contemporary designs so there’s a Shandle for everyone. Below are pictures of one of our favorite Shandles. Mark Goodwin of Tyger Forge is a member of this forum, but if he's tooted his own horn about his unique product, I've missed it. Since we'll be carrying these items exclusively through the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop, I'm proud to introduce you to Tyger Forge hand crafted belt buckles. I'll let Mark add to this thread if he wants to share the details of how he makes these, but each one of these masterpeices is made entirely by his hands - even the rivets are hand made! The round buckles are made to fit on standard 2.25" or 2.5" wide kilt belts (though he can make them for other sizes upon request), and incorporate two different metals to give a nice contrasting appearance.

Six of his designs are currently pictured on our web site, though Mark has three times that many designs that he has researched and created. I'll be adding to the web site as he brings me more buckles.

We have about 25, give or take, buckles on hand right now, in these six designs in various metal combinations. Anything not in stock will be custom ordered for you. Each buckle is supplied in a nice black velvet storage bag, with a polishing cloth and an info card about the history of the particular design.

Bugatti rolled out the limited-edition Pur Sang edition of its Veyron at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, European customers snapped up all five before any American buyers could get their checkbooks out. As a result, Bugatti had to make the Sang Noir the following year and offer U.S. customers first crack at the limited run of fifteen. But for those who really wanted the original polished-aluminum and bare-carbon-fiber edition that kicked off the raft of special-edition Veyrons that followed, they may get that chance as one appears to have popped up for sale.

When it was first seen at the exclusive Burj al Arab, rumours were that it was the first tuned Bugatti Veyron. We are still not quite sure about these rumours, however we do know that this particular car was given a special pearl white and metalic red paint job by the factory. It was also given a unique interior colour combination.

It’s a tribute to the 1950’s Spanish coach builder of the same name. Quite why it’s relevant to a Bugatti, were not sure. Pegaso are famed for their collaborations with Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, as far as we can see, they never worked with Bugatti!

The owner is apparently either Russian or Polish, who spends most of their time in Dubai. The car is up for sale at Otomoto.pl for a staggering €1.85 ($2.45M USD). If rumours are to be believed, the owner won’t be missing the car too much. He’s apparently still got a Mercedes SLR McLaren, Pagani Zonda , Maybach 62, black Mercedes G55, Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Murcielago and a Hummer H2 to keep him company.

The Pokemon Company Japan have today announced the release of Pokemon Heart Gold Version and Pokemon Soul Silver Version for the Nintendo DS. These titles are remakes of the classic Pokemon Gold and Silver which sold well over 21 million copies worldwide when released on the Gameboy Colour back in 1999. Nintendo have confirmed that remakes of their hit Pokémon titles, Gold and Silver, will be heading out to (Japanese) DSs this year, entitled Pokémon Heart Gold and Pokémon Soul Silver respectively.

Originally released on the Game Boy in 2000, Pokémon Gold/Silver introduced a bevy of enhancements to the Pokémon series, not least of which was the addition of time of day related activities, as well as colour graphics. Fans have been asking for a G/S remake for any years now and when Pokemon Sunday stated a new game would be announced on this weeks episode, everyone jumped to a conclusion which turned out to be correct. Nothing has been revealed as of yet besides the fact that it will have improved graphics, sound and functions compared to Fire Red and Leaf Green due to obviously being on the DS rather then the Gameboy Advance. More information is expected when Pokemon Sunday airs this week along with the release of CoroCoro Magazine out on the 15th in Japan.

Heart Gold and Soul Silver are due for release in Japan this Autumn, most likely November since that was when the originals went on sale, everywhere else can expect these in the first half of next year.

Pioneer BDR-203BK Pioneer's latest Blu-Ray writer, the BDR-203BK, might not look any different to its predecessor, the BDR-202BK, but behind its nondescript matte black fascia there lurks a significantly extended range of talents. Installing a Blu-ray Disc recorder is the latest must-have upgrade for desktops, but because they remain thin on the ground, they maintain a price premium. Given the high storage capacity of the Blu-ray format, write speed is particularly important and we’re starting to see drives capable of 8x writing on 25GB and 50GB recordable media. Pioneer’s BDR-203BK appears to be waiting for the media to catch up.

The BDR-203BK is the successor to Pioneer’s BDR-202 and much of the earlier drive’s look and feel is repeated here. This 5.25in internal drive has the same simple front panel, with powered tray, eject button, data LED and a hole for paper-clip-powered, emergency eject. There are also the same Sata data and power connections at the back, as before. Set up is pretty simple, as long as you have an unused SATA controller. The drive has standard fixings and, given an HDMI-compliant graphics card and display, you can play Blu-ray media out-of-the-box with the supplied software. Well, that’s the theory, but we had some problems – more on that later. It’s also capable of handling recordable and rewritable DVD and CD discs, offering write speeds, which are competitive with typical mid-range DVD rewriters.

The bundled software is Cyberlink’s Blu-ray Disc Suite 6 and this seems to be becoming more popular than the Nero equivalent with Blu-ray drive makers. There’s a lot of functionality in Cyberlink’s seven different modules, which comprise PowerDVD for movie and video playback, PowerDirector for video authoring, PowerProducer for slideshows, Power2Go from drag and drop burning, InstantBurn for hard drive-style use of optical discs and Disc Advisor, to check a PC’s Blu-ray compatibility. Some of the apps are better equipped than others and, while Power2Go and InstantBurn between them can handle most of your archive storage needs, you’ll want something a bit more involved than PowerDirector to make more than basic edits to HD video. Power2Go offers three ‘buttons’ on the desktop, over which you drag video, audio or data files to add them to a burn list.

F3 Racing Car Powered By Chocolate

University designers have come up with a Formula Three model racing car which is powered by chocolate oils. They said the body work was made from potatoes, the steering wheel from carrot fibres and the seat from soybean foam.

Dr Kerry Kirwan, of Warwick University, said the aim was to design something “fun, fast and exciting”. Unfortunately the car isn’t able to prove itself in the F3 class races as it would be banned because its fuel is not ‘regualtion’ - being made up of oils found in chocolate. But Dr Kirwan, of the university’s International Automotive Research Centre, said it would deliver the same performance as a racing car made from more standard materials.

He said he hoped the design would make the sport and the wider motor industry re-think their use of green technology and fuels.

This quad-band GSM smartphone does not have 3G, but does include Wi-Fi b/g and Bluetooth. Now that AT&T is offering the Nokia E71x for just $99 with a 2-year contract, though, the Curve 8900 has some stiff competition. Nokia’s device also has a gorgeous screen, support for Wi-Fi, GPS, and a 3.2MP camera. It’s also one of the most beautiful smart phones we’ve ever laid eyes on and is the thinnest on the market.

Designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was discovered in the Antikythera wreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, between Kythera and Crete, in 1901. Subsequent investigation, particularly in 2006, dated it to about 150–100 BC; and hypothesised that it was on board a ship that sank en route from the Greek island of Rhodes to Rome. Technological artifacts of similar complexity did not reappear until a thousand years later.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau visited the wreck for the last time in 1978,but found no more remains of the Antikythera Mechanism. Professor Michael Edmunds of Cardiff University who led the study of the mechanism said: "This device is just extraordinary, the only thing of its kind. The design is beautiful, the astronomy is exactly right. The way the mechanics are designed just makes your jaw drop. Whoever has done this has done it extremely carefully." He added: "...in terms of historic and scarcity value, I have to regard this mechanism as being more valuable than the Mona Lisa."

The device is displayed in the Bronze Collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Athens, accompanied by a reconstruction made and offered to the museum by Derek de Solla Price. Other reconstructions are on display at the American Computer Museum in Bozeman, Montana and the Children's Museum of Manhattan in New York.

Dual-monitor Taskbar

The Multi-monitor Taskbar facility is the most important enhancement of the Windows user interface in the dual display environment - it emulates the main Windows Taskbar services on the additional monitor. Therefore, it does not matter which monitor is used as both provide the same constant action to switch between open windows.

In addition to the Taskbar, this facility can also emulate the Start button on the second monitor. This option allows quick access to the contents of the Start Menu, irrespective of which monitor the mouse is currently on. Such a seemingly minor advantage as having the emulated Taskbar partnered by the Start button avoids the usual irritating mouse marathons across the desktop!

In addition, it is possible to choose between two different modes in which the secondary Taskbar can work: individual or mirror. Using the individual mode ensures that both primary and secondary Taskbars only display those windows located on the Taskbar's host monitor. For example:

- If a window is opened on the 1st monitor, that window has an entry in the Taskbar hosted on the 1st monitor
- If the window is then relocated to the 2nd monitor, its taskbar entry is also relocated to the 2nd monitor's Taskbar

In mirror mode, each open window has an entry in all Taskbars (i.e. all Taskbars display the same contents).

Dual-monitor Task Switcher

The Multi-monitor Task Switcher simultaneously displays the Task Switcher service window on both monitors. This avoids a user having to switch attention from the second monitor when hitting Alt+Tab.

This function is simplicity itself. It's just another small but effective piece of the jigsaw that leads to a truly great development!

4. Dual-monitor Window Management
Last but not least, the Actual Window Manager can help resolve the problematic positioning of multiple windows within the widened dual-display of the Windows desktop. Windows itself fails to provide a solution other than the ordinary mouse-dragging technique. Actual Window Manager provides a number of simple but neat little tricks:

- The additional button is placed onto each window's title bar. A left-click of this button instantly places the subject window on the other monitor (i.e. if the window is on the 1st monitor it jumps to the 2nd, and vice versa). There is no need to manually drag it across the entire desktop!
Another benefit is that any window, whether maximized or not, can be moved in such a way.

- Another smart trick is the "Move to monitor" item in the window's system menu which shows the list of monitors: (the check mark denotes a window's current monitor).
Although it seems that this menu works in the same manner as the button but it's a supplement and not a replacement: this menu can be used when a window's title bar is inaccessible. Example: Imagine that a subject window is on a monitor that is temporarily offline, and that window needs to be present in the visible desktop area. Just activate it by right-clicking the window's Taskbar entry and add it onto the operational monitor via the "Move to monitor" submenu!

- Finally - the icing on the cake: right-click the Maximize button of any window to maximize it over the desktop. The second right-click restores the subject window to its previous size.

All these features ensure that dual-monitor window management is as fast and convenient (if not more fast and convenient!), as single-monitor operation.

Found this interesting game to help pass time and ironically enough, teach about debt and savings? Nothing like a pig on jet skies to help with that. You’re playing as a piggy bank on a jet ski, but the way the game is structured, it becomes obvious the more one plays. The Flash game has simple jumping elements coupled with Super Mario Bros.-like coin collecting, but it’s the details that try to teach the concepts of savings and living within one’s means. The goal of each level is to grab the necessary expenses to fulfill a quota while maximizing your income and avoiding too much debt. But the game and its eight level are harder than it looks because you’re constantly moving forward. Debt Ski is just part of a larger effort to educate young people about handling their money. Seventy percent of all species, including all of the dinosaurs, died out in a relatively short time. In this attractive volume, Frankel (Volcanoes of the Solar System) attempts to pinpoint the cause of this devastation. Summarizing a wealth of scientific information, he argues that either a comet or a huge asteroid slammed into Earth near Puerto Chicxulub, Mexico, releasing a massive amount of energy. The smoke from the enormous fires that ensued, coupled with the colossal amount of debris flung into the atmosphere by the impact, blocked sunlight, changed climate worldwide and led to the extinctions. A true science detective, Frankel marshals his facts, outlines the search for culprits, describes the scene of the crime and portrays the other sleuths on the case. He gives short shrift to alternative explanations (such as volcanic activity) for the mass extinction, however. Every schoolchild now knows that the dinosaurs were killed off by a meteor, but it took a while for scientists to accept the idea. Here's the story of how they changed their minds, by science writer Frankel (Volcanoes of the Solar System, not reviewed, etc.). The discovery of Chicxulub crater in Mexico was the crucial clue in one of the great scientific detective stories of modern times. For more than a century, paleontologists had spun theories to explain the sudden disappearance of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous era, some 65 million years ago. The first clear indication that the extinction was sudden, rather than evolutionary, was the famous paper by Luis Alvarez and others, showing an increase in the rare element iridium in strata associated with the end of the Cretaceous, and suggesting a meteor impact as the cause. The geological community, not used to the notion of extraterrestrial causes for earthly events, at first resisted the suggestion. But other scientists documented additional signs of meteoric activity: shocked quartz crystals, caused only by significant meteor impacts, and tektites, droplets of ejected material that cool into glass spheres. By this point, some scientists had begun to search for the impact craterno sure thing, since there were two chances out of three that the meteor had landed in the ocean. Nonetheless, scientists were largely convinced by the discovery of the Chicxulub crater, which matched all the criteria for the ``smoking gun'' in this mystery. Frankel devotes a chapter to describing the probable aftereffects of the impact, from shock waves to burning ejecta to poisonous chemicals. He then expands his scope to look at the possibility that other mass extinctions were caused by impacts and at the possible implications of these discoveries for human civilization. This sort of involvement is out of character for Wilson, a workaholic estate attorney in New Bern, North Carolina, but he really is determined to change, and Sparks is at his romantic best in this tender love story about a flawed hero trying to right his wrongs. When we last left 37-year-old Jeremy Marsh (a scant six months ago, in Sparks's April pub True Believer), the science columnist had traveled from his New York base to Boone Creek, N.C., to get a story—and ended up falling in love with Lexie Darnell, the 30-year-old town librarian. Now Lexie's pregnant—but it's true love (and a portable job) that's allowing divorcé Jeremy to move down so they can marry and build a life together. The book centers on the tension-filled runup to the wedding. Sparks pulls out all the smalltown stops—psychic grandmother, meddling mayor, sullen townie ex, jealous best friends—and offers Mars/Venus commentary on what makes his characters tick. Jeremy's writer's block, instead of heightening the will-they-or-won't-they tension, is as enervating for readers as it is for him. More compelling are the mysterious e-mails Jeremy receives that suggest Lexie may not be telling the truth (about who the father is, for one thing), and the character of Lexie's psychic grandmother, Doris, who has correctly predicted the sex of every child born in the town. As the wedding gets closer (and house renovations suck more and more money from Jeremy's dwindling savings), Jeremy and Lexie have some serious talking to do, and Sparks throws in a substantial zinger at the end. It's majorly manipulative and totally effective. Have plenty of tissues on hand. (Oct. 18)

Apple is preparing to launch speaking to BusinessWeek have leaked details about an alleged "iPhone lite" and a tablet-like device, one of which may launch as early as this summer. After talk earlier this week regarding Apple and Verizon’s ongoing negotiations, rumors regarding two new mobile devices already in the prototyping stage have leaked from Cupertino. The Apple iPhone Lite and the Apple Media Pad are both tipped as headed for Verizon, the former a cheaper iPhone and the latter having a large touchscreen, VoIP and WiFi connectivity. The sources suggest that one of the devices could launch as early as this Summer, and given the AT&T exclusivity agreement - which ends in 2010 - there’s speculation that the Apple Media Pad may be the first to arrive. However the terms of Apple’s contract with AT&T are not fully known, and if they can argue that the iPhone Lite for Verizon is a separate category of product then they may be able to deliver it to the rival network sooner. It’s unlikely that the Apple iPhone Lite is a CDMA device, though, given the company’s public antipathy toward the US-centric technology, leaving either GSM - which Verizon do not support in the US - or LTE, the first network roll-out of which is promised by the carrier in 2010.
